Not only are these switchboards safer but also make resetting of circuits easier. Faults and problems are easier to detect and the chance of an electrical fire is greatly decreased.

Yes. The state government has introduced new regulations stating that all NSW homes sold or renewing a lease agreement, must have safety switches and hard wired smoke alarms installed by a licensed electrician or electrical contractor.

Yes. A circuit breaker is designed to protect the cables and accessories installed in your premises only. A safety switch is designed to protect you, your family and employees. However, electrical safety switches do not protect under all circumstances. Your licensed electrician can install one of these for you.

Yes. Battery operated smoke alarms are no longer considered adequate in NSW and must be replaced with 240v mains wired type alarms by your electrician. You must also have a safety switch fitted to your lighting circuits. This is a requirement in the state of New South Wales that these electrical regulations are met.

In most cases all you need to do is replace the battery.Battery only alarms can usually be hushed by replacing the battery (usually a 9 volt battery). The alarm should clip (either with a twist or a slide) into a bracket which is secured to the ceiling. A mains powered smoke alarm will still have a battery (usually 9 volt) backup in built. In New South Wales it is currently law that all electrical work be done by an appropriately licensed electrician and certified as being compliant with the various codes. Considerable penalties exist for unlicensed work and failure to provide compliance certification.

Every electrical contractor you engage to provide electrical works should support that work with a Certificate of Compliance (electrical work) commonly known as a CCEW.

We recommend that you should have an electrical inspection carried out if:

• You are purchasing a property that has been occupied
• The property is more that 25 years old
• If it is more that 12 month since one has been done
• If you are concerned about how any of the equipment may have been installed

Double-adaptors to piggy-back a number of electrical items from the one power point can short circuit and cause a fire. If you need more outlets, either have an electrician install extra power points or purchase an approved power board that has a reset button on it.
